Developing children’s heritage language is the wish of many families living abroad. The heritage language helps to maintain the deep connection across generations in the family and with the culture and spirit of the homeland. Heritage language development requires significant efforts of parents and teachers, especially when there are few Vietnamese resources in countries outside Vietnam. This book offers a range of activities to develop Vietnamese that families can do with their children. Teachers my also use this book in the classroom to provide opportunities for students to use the language in class.
When considering language development for young children, we often emphasize the quantity and quality of language input through books and TV programs. This is necessary because young children need to be exposed to a large amount of input in order to develop language abilities. However, their language production (output) is also important for early language development because:
When using language, children can test their "hypotheses" about language to adjust the concept of language in their minds.
When they use language, they also receive additional language input from the person they communicate with.
Using language promotes fluency that the input alone cannot develop.
When children have the opportunities to use language, it can become their daily habit.
This book introduces language games and tasks that are completed in pairs based on pictures. These activities can be done between parent and child, teacher and student, or two students together. They are designed based on the theoretical basis of Task-based Language Teaching. Tasks are activities that require comprehending and communicating meaningful messages in order to achieve a communicative objective.

ACTIVITY CATEORY 1: FIND THE DIFFERENCES
These are activities that learners can do in pairs to practice describing pictures using their own linguistic resources to achieve their communicative objective – finding differences between two pictures. There are 10 activities in this part.

Phát triển ngôn ngữ nguồn cội (heritage language) cho con là mong muốn của nhiều gia đình sinh sống ở nước ngoài. Ngôn ngữ nguồn cội kết nối các thế hệ trong gia đình và với văn hóa, hơi thở và cảm xúc của quê hương. Đây là một việc đòi hỏi nỗ lực rất lớn của cha mẹ và thầy cô đặc biệt khi nguồn tài liệu tiếng Việt ở nước ngoài không nhiều. Cuốn sách này cung cấp các hoạt động phát triển tiếng Việt mà gia đình có thể thực hiện cùng con. Sách cũng có thể được dùng ở lớp học để tạo cơ hội sử dụng ngôn ngữ cho học sinh trong lớp.
Khi bàn về việc phát triển ngôn ngữ nguồn cội cho trẻ nhỏ, chúng ta thường nhấn mạnh vào khối lượng và chất lượng ngôn ngữ đầu vào (input) qua sách vở và các chương trình giải trí. Điều này là hoàn toàn cần thiết vì trẻ nhỏ cần được tiếp xúc với lượng ngôn ngữ đầu vào lớn mới phát triển được khả năng ngôn ngữ. Tuy nhiên, theo nghiên cứu thì việc các em sử dụng ngôn ngữ (output) cũng quan trọng đối với sự phát triển ngôn ngữ sớm bởi vì:
Khi sử dụng ngôn ngữ, các em mới có thể kiểm định được những “giả thuyết” về ngôn ngữ của mình để điều chỉnh khái niệm ngôn ngữ trong đầu.
Khi sử dụng ngôn ngữ thì các em cũng nhận được thêm ngôn ngữ đầu vào từ người giao tiếp với mình.

Cuốn sách này giới thiệu các hoạt động thực hành ngôn ngữ theo cặp dựa vào tranh ảnh. Các hoạt động này có thể được thực hiện giữa cha mẹ và con, giáo viên và học sinh, hoặc hai học sinh với nhau. Các hoạt động này được thiết kế dựa vào cơ sở lý thuyết của việc giảng dạy ngôn ngữ qua nhiệm vụ ngôn ngữ.
