Updated: Jun 28, 2022

Eduling Speak connects learners to talk in pairs during communicative games and tasks

Pittsburgh, PA: On May 12, 2022, Eduling International LLC or Eduling(TM), a company offering online language instruction and services, released a first-of-its-kind app Eduling Speak to connect English learners to talk in pairs while completing communicative tasks. The app is like Netflix of tasks that learners can browse and select to complete daily with a friend or a random learner on the app. Because learners collaboratively solve a problem posed by the task, it provides them with a genuine need to communicate. The app results from Eduling’s years of research and development in task-based language teaching and gamification in language education. The app can now be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play in 176 countries in the world.

“Task-based language teaching has been described as the orthodoxy of language instruction in many countries for decades, but it has been difficult to implement in the classroom due to the lack of materials,” explained Dr. Linh Phung, CEO of Eduling International. “This app offers well-designed tasks that are also gamified to engage learners in meaningful interactions that will drive language development.”

Dr. Linh Phung has been working as the director of the English Language Program at Chatham University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA for over 10 years. She grew up in Vietnam, and after graduating from college and working in Vietnam for a few years, she received a scholarship from the Pennsylvania State University in the USA to pursue an MA in Teaching English as a Second Language. She holds a doctorate in teaching English with a dissertation in task-based language teaching under the supervision of world-renowned applied linguist and scholar Professor Rod Ellis. She has publications with the most prestigious journals in language learning and teaching. One of her recent research projects is in gamification in language learning and teaching. She founded Eduling International to help students to reach higher and go further in their educational journey through English. Thanks to her 15-year work in language instruction and services, Dr. Linh Phung has recently received an Immigrant Entrepreneur Award from Global Pittsburgh. In addition, she has also received a grant from the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council to support her work with the Eduling Speak app.

With the goal of developing English learners’ true communicative competence, Eduling Speak offers endless speaking opportunities to English learners of all ages, proficiency levels, and countries. With this app, parents can easily arrange speaking time for their children. Teachers can manage their students and encourage them to speak English beyond the classroom. Learners can simply turn on their phone and connect with someone in English. The app has been downloaded in over 30 countries shortly after its launch. It fills the gap in the app market, where applications mostly focus on mechanical exercises that usually only involve repetition, imitation, and limited interaction with a machine instead of with humans. The key features of the app include:

  • Task-based: Learners need to talk to complete a task with a tangible outcome at the end

  • Gamified, engaging, and fun

  • Interactive: Learners interact with the app and with another English speaker

  • Like Netflix of tasks and games for learners to choose from

  • Borderless: It connects English speakers from any location in the world

  • Improving learners’ fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and communication skills

How to use the app:

After you download the app from the App Store or Google Play, follow the steps below.

  • Sign up as a Learner, Parent, or Educator

  • Browse through our vast display of tasks and games in different categories

  • Choose a task with a topic of interest, in your age group, and at your proficiency level

  • Wait to be connected with another English speaker randomly

  • You may also ask a friend to start the same task as yours

Task-based language teaching:

Task-based language teaching is an approach in language teaching that helps you to use English authentically and meaningfully based on a task. With a task, you have a reason to communicate. Like solving a puzzle, you also need to have an outcome at the end of the task. This approach has been widely recognized by governments, publishers, and teachers all over the world. Eduling Speak tasks and games are designed by top content experts. Complete a few tasks and games a day, and it’s guaranteed that you will improve your fluency and language skills. Games in language learning: We gamify all of the tasks in the app to give you extra motivation and enjoyment while using the app. You’ll have instant feedback and can track your progress over time.
